🇪🇬 Why Cairo?
Cairo is ancient in a way that rewires your brain. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. The city is enormous, chaotic, and absolutely fascinating. Cairo challenges and rewards you with experiences that cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.
🏛️ The Pyramids of Giza
Nothing can prepare you for your first sight of the pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, built around 2560 BC, stands 481 feet tall. The Sphinx guards the plateau. Book a guided tour to understand the history properly. Go at sunrise for golden light and smaller crowds.
- Book a licensed guide — independent vendors are persistent
- Visit at sunrise for best light
- You can enter some pyramids — book in advance
- Bring cash (EGP) for entrance fees
🏺 Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum houses over 120,000 pieces including Tutankhamun's golden death mask. The Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids is one of the largest archaeological museums in the world.
🛒 Khan el-Khalili Bazaar
The historic market district of Cairo — a labyrinthine souk selling spices, gold, papyrus, and handicrafts since the 14th century. Go in the evening, find a rooftop café for mint tea, and negotiate everything. Al-Fishawy cafe has been open for over 200 years.
🚢 The Nile
A Nile River dinner cruise is a classic Cairo experience — traditional food, belly dancing, live music, and the city skyline on the water. A multi-day Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan is a bucket list experience.
🍽️ Egyptian Food
Koshari (rice, lentils, pasta, tomato sauce) is the national dish. Ful medames is the breakfast of Cairo. Hawawshi (spiced meat in flatbread) is the Egyptian burger. Fresh-squeezed sugarcane juice from street vendors is incredible.
